Frequently Asked Question

Question: My computer is freezing when viewing photos (images) in Windows Explorer. What is wrong?

Answer: If you are running Windows XP and Photoshop, you may come across a problem in Windows Explorer when viewing thumbnail versions of photos (GIF, JPEG, etc.) which are set to open with Adobe Photoshop. Windows Explorer may stall, crash, or even freeze your system when viewing or even retrieving large quantities of images.

To fix this issue, simply right click on your image when in Windows Explorer. Choose Properties from the pull down menu. Click on the Photoshop Image tab. Unclick the Generate Thumbnails checkbox.

If this does not fix your image issue, you might also consider a) more memory (RAM), b) evaluating the health of your hard drive, and c) trying a fresh reload of Windows using your restore utility or other means (note: this requires backup of all data and settings).
