Frequently Asked Question
Question: I'm reinstalling my PC and my new Serial ATA Drive isn't being recognized. What do I do?
Answer: If you are installing Windows XP on a system where you only have a Serial ATA Drive, you might encounter a problem where Windows does not detect your Hard Drive and reports "No mass storage device found" during an installation. This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows XP/2K/NT. You need to load 3rd party drivers (just like with many SCSI drives).
At the blue installation screen, note very carefully at the bottom for the text that asks you to press F6. You MUST press F6 and then provide drivers for your SATA drive. These drivers usually come on a disc from your hard drive or motherboard manufacturer. Make sure you load up the drivers before you continue!
If a driver disc is not present, there are some options. Most simply, connect a spare floppy drive for the duration of the Windows software install process. Finally, Slipstream the Windows XP CD to add the SATA drivers. Check out how to do this on Maximum PC.
If none of these options work for you, we would suggest to have to Windows operating system installed out of the factory, or by a qualified technician.
